Directions

Rapid River Trail follows Rapid River closely up through the canyon, passing by old cave structures and criss-crossing the river on wooden bridges. The last time The Clearwater Trekkers trod this trail was back in the spring of 2019 (read about it here), and it's high time we headed back for more!

To get to the Rapid River Trailhead, go south of Riggins on Highway 95 for about 4 miles, then take a right on Rapid River Rd. Follow this road to its end and you'll find parking for the trailhead opposite the fish hatchery.

The third wooden bridge is about 4 miles out, so it has served as a good lunch and turn around spot for the Trekkers. As usual, though, feel free to hike on beyond this point and enjoy the views you'll earn as the trail rises up out of the canyon.

The weather currently reports 60 degrees and mostly sunny, but come prepared for changes as this is still spring time in Idaho. We recommend sturdy shoes or boots as the trail may be muddy and is certainly rocky in places. Hiking poles help, too.

Pack a lunch and plenty of water. Depending on how we do on time, perhaps we can hit up a diner in Riggins for some post-hike grub, or maybe we could explore the Lucille Cave just off the highway.
