CANCELED DUE TO ROAD CLOSURES AND FIRE
One of my all time favorite hikes with The Clearwater Trekkers was early on in 2016 when we hiked the Smith Ridge Trail to Heart LakeĀ and spent the night there in the Mallard Larkins Pioneer Area. You can read about that adventure on our blog post, "Exploring the Heart of the Mallard Larkins Pioneer Area."
This Labor Day Weekend, let's do it again! But this time, let's spend two nights at Heart Lake, and on Sunday we can day hike to Mallard Peak. Are you in?
It's a bit of a drive to get to the Smith Ridge Trailhead, so camping out the night before is advisable if you can manage it. It's about a 3-hour drive from Lewiston. We're looking at 24 miles over all with an 8-mile hike in to Heart Lake, 4 miles to Mallard Peak and 4 miles back to camp, and then 8 miles back to our vehicles. This will be challenging, but so worth it. Bring plenty of food and water, but also a water filter. Sturdy shoes, walking poles, fishing poles, and a good camera are all advised! Let's have some fun out there.
The Google Map link will help you get directions, and this Gaia Map will let you explore the route. Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have. I'm sure we'll have a Facebook group discussion going, too. This should be a fun (but challenging) hike. Hope to see you there!
