Let's welcome 2023 in style
with a New Year's Day soak at Weir Hot Springs!
Located about 68.5 miles east of Kooskia, ID on Highway 12 near mile marker 142, Weir Hot Springs is only a half-mile or so from the trailhead. Two things to note are:
- The parking lot is not big, so we'll meet up at the old Kooskia weigh station at the junction of Highways 12 and 13 to carpool at 8:30am, and
- The trail to the hot spring pool is known to be icy and difficult in the winter. Hiking poles and crampons (ice cleats for your boots) are recommended.
Also, the Forest Service has had to enact some limitations on the use of Weir Hot Springs (and extend those limitations on Jerry Johnson) due to mistreatment of these natural resources. The area is closed between 8pm and 6am Pacific Time, so we'll day hike in and not plan on camping out. Let's also be conscious of how we treat the land with respect and Leave No Trace principles. I know that as Clearwater Trekkers, that's already our style!
If you're looking for a pristine way to initiate the new year, join us at Weir Hot Springs on Sunday, January 1st, 2023! We'll meet at the Kooskia weigh station to carpool at 8:30am, and we'll aim to be at the trailhead by 10:00am. Bring a sack lunch and plenty of water. Dress warm, and wear sturdy boots. Hiking poles and/or crampons are highly recommended.
Feel free to comment below if you have visited Weir Hot Springs recently and have any advice to share. We'd love to see you out there! Here's to an amazing year of hiking!
