04/25/26: Lower Latah Trail Bear Creek Canyon

Details

Map

The Latah Trail is an old railroad route turned into a recreation trail that runs from Moscow to Troy and down through Bear Creek Canyon to Kendrick, where it turns into the Kendrick-Juliaetta Recreation Trail. The trail is paved from Moscow to about 4 miles into Bear Creek Canyon south of Troy, but there's about 6.5 miles of unpaved trail in Bear Creek Canyon beckoning for the Clearwater Trekkers to explore.

The Lower Latah Trail looks to be a slow, steady gain of about 800 feet over 6.5 miles going from Kendrick towards Troy. That should make for easy enough going and quite a pleasant return. We don't have to do the full 6.5 miles, but we'll at least aim for the West Fork Bear Creek junction, about 5.5 miles in. After the hike, we can swing into Hardware Brewing for a bite to eat.

If you're interested in exploring this area, join us at the east end of the Kendrick-Juliaetta Recreation Trail by the Kendrick High School, this Saturday, April 25th at at 9:00am. Contact Todd Holcomb if you would like to carpool from the Lewiston Community Center. We can meet up around 8:00am.

Wear sturdy shoes, pack water and food for lunch, and dress in layers. Current weather reports show cool and sunny, but this is Idaho, so that could change.

See you on the trail!
