In 2022, landowner Trish Hartzell worked together with Palouse Land Trust to secure and develop Penstemon Path, which connects Idler's Rest to Love Connection and the greater Moscow Mountain trail system. After hundreds of hours of trail work and thousands of dollars provided by Moscow Area Mountain Bike Association (MAMBA), Palouse Road Runners, and others, the trail opened to the public in 2023. On Saturday, May 17th, The Clearwater Trekkers are going to explore Idler's Rest, Penstemon Path, and Love Connection on a big, loopy day hike.
We'll meet up at the Idler's Rest Parking Area at 9:00am and start the day ambling along the Highland Loop Trail of Idler's Rest. As a group we can decide how many of the trails we want to explore within Idler's Rest, but I believe a figure-eight loop is about 1 mile. Once we're back at the parking area, we'll follow Penstemon Path up the hillside and through the meadow. We'll take the loop in a clock-wise fashion and stop to take photos at the lookout point.
Penstemon Path adds another mile to our hike, one-way. Love Connection adds an additional .7 miles one-way and will be the most aggressive portion of the hike. Altogether, we're looking at about a 4-mile day. Feel free to hike as much or little or more of this trail as you want you! The hike will start off easy and progress to moderate. The weather is looking good for now, but keep an eye on it here. For more details on the trail, including distance and elevation, you can check out this article on Trailforks linked below.
See you on the trail!
