See you on the trail!
The snows are hitting the mountain tops, so let’s finish out the season with a hike along the Lochsa River Trail! This is the Lochsa River National Recreation Trail that runs for about 16 miles alongside Highway 12, just up the hillside from the river. We’ve tried this trail before from it’s western end, but this time we’ll start at the Wilderness Gateway Campground on the east end and hike west.
At 9:00 AM, we’ll meet at the parking area just outside Kooskia, ID where Highway 12 and Highway 13 meet. As you head east on Highway 12, take a right like you were going into Kooskia, but don’t cross the bridge into town. Instead, take an immediate right into the parking area.
The Wilderness Gateway Campground is about an hour east from Kooskia. The plan is to follow the trail for about 4 or 5 miles, do lunch, and then head back. I anticipate we’ll back at our cars by 2:30 or 3:00 PM.
Current weather reports say it’ll be a decent day, but come prepared for the cold and wet. You can always leave that extra layer in the car if it turns out nice. So, layer up, wear good trail shoes, bring food and plenty of water, and we’ll see you on the trail!
