“Closures — Shale Creek Fire
Looks like we’re getting smoked out of this one, guys! I’m afraid our Kelly Creek hike is canceled due to the Shale Creek fire.
The Clearwater Trekkers are going deep into the backcountry for this one! The Kelly Creek Trailhead is a 3-hour drive from Greer. We’ll meet up at the parking area just to the left as you cross the bridge into Greer from Highway 12 at 7:00 AM on Saturday, September 14th and carpool to the trailhead. Feel free to camp at the trailhead the night before, or meet us there if Greer is not on your way.
Kelly Creek Trail #567 is an easy hike with only 400 feet of elevation gain over the first 6 miles. That being said, Mary Aegerter mentions an “initial uphill approach” in her post about this trail. Griffin Trotter, on AllTrails, describes this trail as a pleasant hike along or above the river with little tree cover. So think of this trail as something along the lines of the Rapid River Trail, the Selway River Trail, or the Lochsa Downriver Trail.
We are planning an easy-going 3-mile hike and an overnight camp. We’ll have kids from 3 years old to 15 years old and 2 friendly dogs with us. Feel free to join us at our pave or to crush miles at your own pace. We’d love to meet you at the trailhead and see you off. We can all hike our own hikes and share pictures afterward, right?
If you have any questions about gear, directions, or anything else, don’t hesitate to reach out. See you on the trail!
