Diamond Peak Trail – LCV Hikers @ Lewiston Community Center
Aug 24 @ 7:00 am – 2:00 pm
Diamond Peak Trail - LCV Hikers @ Lewiston Community Center | Lewiston | Idaho | United States

August 24:  Diamond Peak Trail, which is in the Wenaha Wilderness on the Pomeroy Ranger District of the Umatilla Forest, about an hour south of Pomeroy, Washington.  We’ll meet at the Lewiston Community Center at 7:00am, and carpool from there.   As this is in the wilderness area no Discovery Pass or permit is needed.  It is an in-and-back-out trail, approximately 10 miles total.  Again there are some steep summits, so we’re calling this hike moderate to difficult in spots.

Wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots.  Some people find hiking poles are helpful.  Always bring water, lunch and sunscreen.  We begin by gathering at a meeting point and carpooling from there.  Please also be sure to bring some cash for the driver if you’re carpooling with someone else.

LCV Hikers Moscow Mountain hike @ Lewiston Community Center | Lewiston | Idaho | United States

September 7:  Moscow Mountain hike

Kay will lead an approximate 6-7 mile hike on Moscow mountain.  We will meet at the Lewiston Community Center at 8 am, and carpool to another meeting area at the baseball park in Troy, Idaho, where Kay will meet us at 9 am.  This hike is a new one which she has explored and is willing to share with us, so length and difficulty is up to the leader the day of the hike.

Kelly Creek Overnight Hike @ Orofino City Park
Sep 14 @ 7:00 am – Sep 15 @ 5:00 pm
Kelly Creek Overnight Hike @ Orofino City Park | Orofino | Idaho | United States
The Clearwater Trekkers are going deep into the back country for this one! The Kelly Creek Trailhead is a 3-hour drive from Orofino. We’ll meet up at the Orofino City Park at 7:00 AM on Saturday, September 14th and carpool to the trailhead. Feel free to camp at the trailhead the night before, or meet us there is Orofino is not on your way.

Kelly Creek Trail #567 is an easy hike with only 400 feet of elevation gain over the first 6 miles. That being said, Mary Aegerter mentions an “intial uphill approach” in her post about this trail. Griffin Trotter, on AllTrails, describes this trail as a pleasant hike along or above the river with little tree cover. So think of this trail as something along the lines of the Rapid River Trail, the Selway River Trail, or the Lochsa Downriver Trail.

We are planning an easy-going 3 mile hike and an overnight camp. We’ll have kids from 3 years old to 15 years old and 2 friendly dogs with us. Feel free to join us at our pave or to crush miles at your own pace. We’d love to meet you at the trailhead and see you off. We can all hike our own hikes and share pictures afterwards, right?

If you have any questions about gear, directions, or anything else, don’t hesitate to reach out. See you on the trail!

LCV Hikers Explore the Eagle Cap Wilderness @ Wallowa Lake Trailhead in Joseph, Oregon
Sep 14 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

September 14:  Our last hike of the year, a potential overnight hike to the Eagle Cap Wilderness by Wallowa Lake, Oregon.  Jim Reid will lead a hike along the West Fork of the Wallowa River, and we will meet at the trailhead (map attached) at 9 am on Saturday, September 14.  As shown on the map, the Wallowa Lake Trailhead is where Oregon Hwy 82 paved road ends.

The drive to the trailhead is approximately 2 ½ hours, so there is the option of staying overnight at the campground/RV parks at Wallowa Lake or motels/cabins around the Lake or in Joseph.  Everyone is on their own for making their lodging accommodations.  Some ideas are the Wallowa Lake State Park (website accessed through oregonstateparks.com), Airbnb, and Eagle Cap Chalets in Joseph. If you want to share the costs of a cabin or motel room with others the September 4th Hiking Club meeting would be a good time to bring your ideas and get together with others.

The hike is approximately 12 miles in and out, and considered easy to moderate, with an elevation gain of 1350 feet to Six Mile Meadow and then return.  We’ll eat lunch on the trail.

It is not an overnight hike, but staying over the night before and/or after is the ‘overnight’ we’re talking about.  For those who do stay overnight and are interested, we could get together for dinner the night before our hike.

If you’re interested in attending this September 14 hike, please be sure to come to the next hiking club meeting, September 4 at 7 pm so we can together iron out arrangements, details, and get an idea of how many will be attending.

Wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots.  Some people find hiking poles are helpful.  Always bring water, lunch, and sunscreen.  We begin by gathering at a meeting point and carpooling from there.  Please also be sure to bring some cash for the driver if you’re carpooling with someone else.
